Day of Fun
We partnered up with New Mexico PBS, UNM's Center for Regional Studies, and the Cesar Chavez Day of Service Committee to co-host a beautiful event at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. We invited Valle Vista Elementary School, Polk Middle School, and community members to watch clips of Arcie Chapa's Acequias: The Legacy Lives On.
Students then took a marcha to the Bosque where they had lunch and participated in Day of Service workstations. To wrap things up, Jorge Garcia and Andrea Lopez led a very special ceremony that allowed the students to honor the water that sustains us.
NMPBS compiled the footage from this day of fun, learning, and service into a beautiful ad which was aired this past month on NMPBS. Check it out and let us know what you think!
Growing Plants
Program Coordinator, Taty Trujillo led a beautiful workshop at Valle Vista Elementary School. She used our "Ciclos de la Tierra: Cultivating Querencia through Mutualismo and Justice" place-based curriculum to guide attendees through the cycles of planting and growing plants. The parents and students in attendance planted tomato and chile seeds.
Students wished the seeds buena suerte as the seeds will be used in their up and coming acequia/garden outdoor learning classroom.
This acequia/garden outdoor learning classroom for Valle Vista could not be done without the work from students, parents, Valle Vista staff, and partnering organizations like us at CESOSS, MRGCD, Explora, and others!
Unwavering Dedication
Our Cultivando Nuestro Futuro Interns attended the 56th New Mexico Legislature, during the Youth & Food day where our interns got to observe the billmaking process.
Our interns were joined by Polk Middle School, South Valley Preparatory Middle School, FoodCorp service members, and La Plazita. During their time at the legislature, our interns engaged in meaningful conversations, shared compelling stories, and provided invaluable insights to lawmakers about the critical importance of universal meals. Their passion, dedication, and commitment to creating positive change were truly inspiring to witness.
We are immensely proud of our interns for their unwavering dedication and hard work in advocating for a cause that is central to our vision of creating sustainable, healthy, and thriving communities where traditions connected to land and water are protected, preserved, and passed onto future generations. Their efforts exemplify the spirit of our organization and serve as a testament to the power of youth voices in shaping policies that impact our communities.
